There’s something timeless and storied about marble that just speaks to me. I know some people prefer low-maintenance materials, but I love how marble wears over time. It’s a material with history that shows its life and has a depth that man made materials have yet to successfully imitate. I love the imperfections that nature created and the moments of our life spent in the kitchen that add to those.

Natural stones are works of art that you put in your home and I could spend hours looking at different slabs (and I did!). There are so many possibilities and each one infuses a different style into the space. Arabescato and Viola marbles are statement pieces, Bianco marbles are subtle, and Calacattas fall in between. I knew I wanted something "in between" so I would have a bit more design flexibility in the kitchen but also wanted something that really said "marble." So the hunt was on, but it's easy to forget that choosing a slab is just a tiny part of the overall countertop journey. Here is our story from selection to install.

When we started designing the kitchen for our new home, I knew one thing right away: I wanted marble countertops.

Why Surface Providers?

We selected our fabricator, Surface Providers in Alpharetta, first since they will be in charge of handling the stone and bringing your vision to life. Finding the right slab is one thing, but your fabricator matters just as much—maybe more. Cutting and installing stone takes serious expertise, and working with someone who understands the details (and cares about getting them right) makes all the difference. Surface Providers was personally recommended to us and has a reputation for being the best in class from start to finish. After meeting with Bonnie (one of the owners) and Lise we knew we made the right choice. They recommended Ciot in Atlanta for sourcing our slabs from, so that was our next step.

Find Your Fabricator

Find Your Fabricator

Ciot Atlanta has a stunning selection of natural stone, and the moment you walk in, you can tell they care deeply about quality and curation. Every slab felt like it was chosen intentionally, and was displayed like a work of art (which it is!). If you're in the Atlanta area and hunting for stone—especially natural options like marble, quartzite, or travertine—Ciot should be your first stop.

They had so many beautiful slabs but I was able to narrow it down to a stunning group of Calacatta Borghini marble slabs that had the perfect shade of white base with warm grey veining that was not too intense but still gave that POP I was looking for. All we had to do was tell them which slabs we wanted, and Surface Providers coordinated the rest for us.

Choosing Your Stone

Choosing Your Stone

Has a classic, high-end look that never goes out of style.

Every slab is unique—no repeated patterns, just natural character.

It etches, stains, and needs routine sealing to stay looking its best.

More prone to scratches than quartz or quartzite.

Marble develops subtle marks and wear with use—adding character for some, but something to consider if you prefer a pristine look.

Shows Its History Over Time

The next step was handled for us, but I got to watch part of the process. Surface Providers had the stone delivered to their warehouse where I was able to choose which slabs I wanted for each section of the kitchen and pantry. They used a cutting edge photography and project planning software system to create renderings of our stone so I could see exactly where each cut would be made and where the veining would fall on each surface. This gave me so much peace of mind because I am so indecisive!! I had a very specific vision for how all the pieces would come together.

Planning & Fabrication

I'm not a fan of tile backsplash, so we chose to have a 22" tall solid marble backsplash. Ideally, I wanted the stone to look like it flowed from the countertop right up the wall without any breaks - so imagine if you took a piece of paper with a pattern on it and folded at a 90 degree angle - that is how I wanted the stone pattern to carry up the wall. Well it turns out that lining that up is actually tricky! But Surface Providers took the extra time and care to make adjustments till it was perfect and absolutely nailed it. The veining lines up perfectly and make a stunning statement when you walk into the kitchen.

The Ledge

I had a specific vision (thank you Pinterest) for a small ledge at the top of the backsplash that was around 5" deep...but didn't want to have it be thicker than the rest of the counters AND I didn't want visible brackets. If you look at blog posts online, most people have to add crazy steel bracketing which adds a ton of cost or they have to double up the thickness of the ledge to allow for hidden supports. My request definitely presented the designers at surface providers with a challenge, but they went above and beyond to find a way to make it work. Their solution was to sandwich about 1/2" of the marble ledge inside a channel they cut out of the drywall and studs to provide support from both above and below then they glued it into place with heavy-duty adhesive. It’s not meant to hold a ton of weight, but it’s sturdy, streamlined, and exactly what I envisioned.

Installation

We had marble installed in our last home and I know how tricky it can be and we had so many issues I would rather forget. But installing with Surface Providers was a breeze! Their crew came in with top-of-the-line equipment, communicated clearly, and installed everything without a hitch - and made it look effortless! I was actually kind of dreading install day because of my past experiences, but it was turned out to be really fun to watch them transform my kitchen.

Ciot Atlanta

Marble isn’t for everyone—but it is for me. It’s timeless., elegant and understated. I actually like the imperfections and the way it softens with time. The little scratches, smudges, and etching tell the story of a space that’s lived in and loved (isn't that what history is after all?). It feels personal in a way no other material does.

This kitchen feels like such a reflection of our style, and the countertops really anchor the entire space. I’m so grateful to Ciot for helping me find the perfect slabs, and to Surface Providers for making my vision a reality with precision, patience, and skill. If you're renovating or building in the Atlanta area, these are two vendors I’d wholeheartedly recommend.

SURFACE PROVIDERS

If you love the look of marble but aren’t ready to commit to the upkeep, high-definition printed quartz has come a long way. The latest technology offers impressively realistic veining and softness—and it's virtually maintenance-free. It’s a great option if you want that marble aesthetic without the patina and daily babying.

Look for Less

Look for Less

Marble has natural depth, soft movement, and one-of-a-kind veining that runs through the stone. It feels organic and storied.

Quartz offers a more consistent look with realistic printed patterns. It’s polished, modern, and easy to match across surfaces.

Look & Feel

Marble is softer and more porous—it can scratch, stain, and etch from everyday use. It needs regular sealing and gentle care.

Quartz is non-porous and low maintenance. It resists stains, scratches, and doesn’t require sealing, making it great for busy households.

Durability & Maintenance

Marble develops a lived-in look, with subtle marks that reflect daily life. Some call it patina, others call it wear—it depends on your taste.

Quartz stays looking like-new for years. It’s ideal if you prefer a pristine, uniform finish that won’t change over time.

Aging Over Time

Marble can be more expensive, especially with expert fabrication. But for many, its natural beauty and uniqueness are worth it.

Quartz is often more cost-effective overall, especially for large projects or seamless installations. It's a smart choice for durability and design flexibility.
